i dunno what’s wrong with today’s
major label a.k.a. THE BIG FOUR
(EMI,MCA-UNIVERSAL,WARNER,SONU-BMG).
i mean they really lost it…
back then in the 90’s when grunge
music was popular suddenly they’re
marketing bands like Matchbox Twenty
(WARNER),SISTER HAZEL(sonybmg),etc as
grunge when these bands doesn’t even
qualify to grunge lyrically and even
musically (cmon we all know SISTER
HAZEL is a folk rock band,…
..and now they never change…
marketing people are really out of
their mind..they don’t even know what
music really is..
Take a look at the RnB chart. Almost
everything with programmed
beats, hype, and a little rap is in the
RnB category to the point that drum
and bass song "My Humps by Black Eyed
Peas is considered or marketed as
RnB…WHAT???? !!! God help us all..we
must be either tone deaf or we doesnt
really know what RnB is…
true enough their are real RnB artists
today that incorporate hiphop and
popin their sounds (e.g.
Ashnati,aaliyah,Kyla,Alicia Keys,Craig
David)
But to call Promiscuous Girl and My
Hump rnb? give ua a break!!!! Nelly
furtado is not even an RnB singer (for
all u info she’s a folk singer from
canada but somehow made a hiphop/drum
& bass album,not RNB)…
and here comes the nice part…
EMO music or emotional rock is
suddenly rising nowadays for some
unknown reason.
but back in the late 80’s and the
90’s,this genre is unknown to the
masses..only those underground
alternative rock fans knew this type
of music.( and yes, there are some emo
in the 90’s that’s marketed as
grunge…funny isnt it?)
u might recognize names like Blue
October, Pedro The Lion, Jimmy Eat
World,Bright Eyes,Switchfoot..these
are bands in the 90’s with deep
emotional lyrics and also uses emotion
in thier performances…
..but here’s the catch, switchfoot is
not considered emo during the
90’s..heck,nobody even knows they
existed..
..but now,they’re being marketed by
SONY as emo-rock (maybe due to their
hair) and yes jon forman does sing
with emotion but compare their lyrics
today than their lyrics before…which
is more emo?
..and the Wiki also define emo as a
subgenre of punk rock but really if u
come to realize it Bright Eyes is not
even Punk Rock..Dashboard Confessional)
Chris Carraba) maybe fronting a
Christian punk band FURTHER SEEMS
FOREVER but his Dashboard project is
really far from punk. he even admit
that during spaces between FURTHER
SEEMS FOREVER TOUR he sits down in his
bedroom and recorded what would become
as the first DASHBOARD project because
he didn’t feel it fit to his punk band.
..and that was the beginning of what
we now call as commercial EMO..but
dont get me wrong, dashboard was not
making that side project for
commercial purposes.its like his audio
diary but somehow it was
different, while the EMO’s of the late
80’s and 90’s deal with darker themes,
dashboard deals with pain but also
with coping up.in other words,his
sound is in the positive light (no
wonder,He’s a christian and christians
have joy even in pain).
and then as kids noticed him, major
label begun looking for band that
sounds like either Dashboard or
Further and marketed them as emo.
one example is Fall Out Boy.when they
started emo was not even on their
mind. They were just plain hardcore
and punk rock band but somehow the
label considered them emo..and so they
released their first major album which
until now i cannot still understand
why it is emo.i just can’t feel the
honesty and emotion.
The only band i can think of that
major label gt bullseye is MY CHEMICAL
ROMANCe…i may not understand some of
their lyrics as they sing but as i
read them, its really emo… plus
their performance is emo too…
truth is EMO should not be stereotyped
as punk rock ssubgenre becasue i know
a lot of artists that are EMO as can
get,both lyrcally and in performance.
examples are:
Andrew Osenga,Nickel Creek,Bright
Eyes,Griffin House,
but if u wanna hear real emo, then one
artist comes to mind…HANK WILLIAMS.
